Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research was established in the year 1977 with a focus on giving a new dimension to Business Studies. It is part of the Shikshana Prasaraka Mandali, which has under its purview, 43 prominent institutions across the country.

Welingkar Institute has gained the distinction of being one of the few institutes whose distance learning programs have been accredited by the Distance Education Council (DEC), an apex agency, responsible for recognizing Open and Distance Learning Institutions in India.
The full time programs offered by Welingkar are accredited by AICTE, an apex body to Indian Accreditation of Business Schools. It also SAQs (South Asian Quality Assurance System) accredited.
